Would you believe me if I told you there is a workout that can give you longer, leaner legs and buns to die for without weight-room bulk?
This book teaches the basics of the Pilates method of fitness, a whole body workout that strengthens the abs and back and straightens the posture. Practiced worldwide by dance companies, physical therapists, and health clubs, the method is especially good for pregnant women, for people who have special fitness needs because of chronic back pain, joint stress, or obesity, and for anyone wishing to prevent osteoporosis. |
I just got this book a couple of days ago and have been reading it cover to cover. I love it! I would consider it one of the best books on the basics of pilates that I have picked up. I have found it to be extremely helpful...Karon Karter has done a wonderful job...thanks so much. -- Susan
I started doing Pilates 5 years ago at the age of 16. I actually started with this very book, believe it or not. I have since had experience with others - a VHS by Ana Caban, Yogilates by Jonathon Urla, Winsor Pilates, Brooke Siler. I would have to say that the best out there are from this book and Brooke Siler's The Pilates Body.In fact, now after 3 kids, 1 natural birth and 1 cesarean, I am going to back to this book. This book is great because it goes into depth; teaching you how to add more moves in levels of advancement as opposed to doing them all (Mari Winsor) All-in-All, this is a great book. Of course you want to see a view of it, or better yet work with a pilates instructor, but this is a good start. – Brenna E. Arthur
A very global presentation to Pilates Method. Very well presented. Brings a wider knowledge of Pilates, not just exercises: quotes from Joseph Pilates, warning for exercises, historical facts, scientific facts, positive and enriching comments, modifications and variations, specific exercises for thighs and hips (hip joint stabilization), presentation of the Cadillac and barrel, etc. I know, I know, nothing compares to a great private lesson with a great teacher, but that's just the appetizer... - Hélène Roy
Get this Book! This book has great explanations, and contrary to other reviews, I didn't find it too wordy. For example, Karon devotes an entire chapter to breathing correctly, which helped me immensely. (I was wondering how you were supposed to breathe but suck your stomach in too). She also explains well which muscles are emphasized in this method and how to feel and work them. The only thing I'd change is to put captions on the photos. Between this book and Brooke Siler's, I think I can learn the method, even though it's difficult at first. But you have to take time to learn it right.

Cracking the Secret Code of Pilates: I've studied Pilates with a private trainer for over a year and have made good progress; I almost didn't buy this book because of one reviewer's opinion about it being "needlessly wordy" or something to that effect...I totally disagree with his/her assessment. What I found to be the case is that for the first time since tackling Pilates, I truly understand the cognitive fundamentals one must understand in order to succeed. I've read them many times written by many authors, but I guess I'm a complete idiot because this is the only one that got through to me! – Francophile
What a great book! I found it easy to follow and no limit to instruction to help you. I feel taller and slimmer already after one month. I encourage beginners to try this book. I hope this author writes more health and fitness books. I will be looking fo them. Thank you Karon. The pilates calass I attend uses this book as their bible -- step-by-step. -- Austin
This book is a great teaching tool tool to go along with the classes I have taken. Everyone should try the Pilates methods as Karon Karter has made it easy to follow and after a short time the results are great. This is an intelligent, well-researched book. All of us in the Pilates class are using the book at home to continue the workout and it is wonderful. Thank you Karon Karter! -- Victorioa Zummo
I've love this book. I've been wanting to learn more about pilates for a long time, and when I saw this book, I thought it could introduce me to this new form of exercise that I knew nothing about. Karon explains everything in detail and it is easy to understand. The pictures are excellent examples as well. I suggest this book to anyone wanting to know more about pilates. This is the book for you!! --Becky Bynum
As a dedicated and avid runner, I've always had a closed mind to any other form of exercise....UNTIL reading Ms. Karter's Pilates book. With her help, I now fully understand the benefits of Pilates and incorporate it into my daily exercise regimen. Her clear and concise instructions made the learning process both easy and enjoyable. Thank you, Ms. Karter, for widening my horizons and lifting my spirit. -- Ananymous
Being one who is not inclined to exercise and who needs easy to follow instructions with pictures, I am pleased to read about tried and practiced methods presented in a cleaver and engaging style. The book should be helpful to all who read it and appreciate someone who cared enough to share their gift with us. -- Brudluff
I rather eat glass than exercise! But I heard good things about Pilates--yet it seemed so hard until I read Karon Karter's book. She writes in detail about the concepts, why we should be doing Pilates, and how to do the moves along with modifications (which I very much needed.) Thank you for writing a book that really teaches us the meaning of the word Pilates! -- Victoria Zummo
Before I read Ms. Karter's book, I was initially curious about the concept of Pilates - but was always intimidated by the equipment and the complex look of the moves. However, after seeing her demonstrate the exercises on TV and listening to her on the radio, I decided to buy the book. Best thing that I ever did. This book takes away all of the mystery - and is written in a fun, witty, and clear manner. The photos are extremely helpful - and a lot easier to understand than the other Pilates books I have read. It kept my full attention from start to finish. I have recommended it to all of my fiends, and bought several copies as gifts. If you buy just one book on Pilates - THIS SHOULD BE IT! -- M. G. Bailey
